Post #2 – Web/Mobile App Critique: REVER App Review
Course Learning Outcome (CLO 4)
As an avid motorcycle rider, I regularly use the REVER app on my iPhone to plan routes, track rides, and connect with other riders. REVER is a GPS navigation and ride-planning app designed specifically for motorcyclists, off-roaders, and adventure riders. Its ability to combine navigation, ride logging, and community interaction makes it a powerful tool for both casual riders and serious explorers.
Usability
REVER is generally user-friendly once you get the hang of it, but there is a slight learning curve at first due to its many features. The home screen provides quick access to:
-
Plan a Ride
-
Go Riding
-
Ride History
-
Community Feed
Navigation tabs at the bottom of the screen include:
-
Map
-
Feed
-
Ride
-
Challenges
-
Profile
Planning routes is intuitive—you can pick start and end points, add waypoints, choose on-road or off-road paths, and import GPX files. However, some advanced tools (like offline maps and 3D terrain) are locked behind a paid subscription, which might limit free users.
Design
REVER uses a sleek, dark mode interface that’s ideal for riding in the evening. The maps are detailed and motorcycle-focused, showing:
-
Twisty roads
-
Elevation changes
-
Off-road trail options
The layout features large, glove-friendly buttons that make it practical for use on a handlebar-mounted phone. Icons are clearly labeled, though it may take several taps to find deeper features (like editing a saved route or checking ride stats).
The community feed looks similar to social media, where users post photos, ride routes, and experiences—a great way to discover new rides or get inspiration.
Functionality
REVER runs smoothly on the iPhone, syncing instantly with GPS to track your ride in real-time. During a ride, it logs:
-
Speed
-
Distance
-
Elevation
-
Duration
It also connects with Bluetooth intercom systems and integrates with Apple Health to track your physical activity. Additional features include:
-
Riding challenges
-
Route sharing
-
Butler Maps overlays (highlighting top-tier motorcycle roads)
That said, in remote areas without cell service, some users report GPS drift or lag—unless offline maps are preloaded.
Recommendations for Improvement
-
Simplify the User Interface
With so many features, new users may feel overwhelmed. A simplified layout or guided tour would improve onboarding. -
Free Access to Basic Offline Maps
Allowing limited offline map access for free would benefit riders in areas with poor reception and enhance safety. -
Enhanced Ride Playback
Adding an animated playback feature to visualize the ride in real-time (like a “replay” mode) would be fun and useful for reviewing trips.
Summary
REVER is a robust and well-designed mobile app that meets the unique needs of motorcycle enthusiasts. While some premium features require a subscription, its free version offers valuable tools for planning, tracking, and enjoying your rides. A few minor usability upgrades could make it even better, especially for new users or those riding in low-signal areas.
